Legal
Terms of use
Last updated: 21 September 2026
What these terms cover
They cover your use of this website, pisg.github.io, and the documentation and example pages on it. They do not replace the licence of the software: pisg itself is governed by the GNU General Public License, version 2 or later, and that licence wins wherever the two could be read differently.
If you do not agree with what is below, please do not use the site.
Who runs this
pisg is a volunteer free-software project. The program was written in 2001 by Morten “mbrix” Brix Pedersen and published at sourceforge.net/projects/pisg; development continues at github.com/PISG/pisg. There is no company behind it, nothing is sold, and no support is owed to anyone.
“IRC”, “Undernet”, “eggdrop”, “ZNC”, “mIRC”, “irssi”, “AdiIRC”, “GitHub” and other names on this site belong to their respective owners and are used only to say what pisg works with. No affiliation or endorsement is implied, in either direction.
Licence: the software, the site, the documentation
- The program — GPL-2.0-or-later. You may run it for any purpose, read it, change it and pass it on, under the same licence. The full text ships with the distribution.
- This website's code — the HTML, CSS and JavaScript in the site repository, under the same licence as the project unless a file says otherwise.
- The documentation text — you may quote it, translate it and republish it, with attribution and a link back. That is what it is for.
- The example pages under
/demo/are made-up data, free to copy as a template.
No warranty
The site, the documentation and the software are provided “as is”, without warranty of any kind, express or implied, including merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose and non-infringement. Sections 11 and 12 of the GPL say this for the program, at more length, and they apply.
The documentation can be out of date or simply wrong. The site can be unavailable, change, or stop existing. Nobody promises a release, a feature, a fix or a reply.
Liability
To the fullest extent the law allows, the pisg maintainers and contributors are not liable for any loss or damage — direct, indirect, incidental or consequential — arising from the use of this site, the documentation or the software. That includes lost data, a page you wish you had not published, and anything a third party does with what you published.
Some laws do not allow these exclusions. Nothing here removes rights you have that cannot be waived, including consumer protection rights under provincial law in Canada, the Consumer Protection Act in Quebec, and equivalent rules elsewhere. Where an exclusion above is not permitted, it applies to the maximum extent that is.
Using the site
It is a set of static pages. Read them, copy from them, link to them, mirror them. Please do not attack the host, hammer it with automated requests, or present the site as somebody else's. Everything here is also in a public Git repository, which is a kinder way to take a copy.
What you are responsible for
pisg turns chat logs into a page about the people who wrote them. Running it is your decision and publishing the result is your act:
- Have the right to the logs you feed it, and follow the rules of the network and channel they came from.
- Obey the law where you and your users are. Nicknames, timestamps, quoted
messages and behaviour summaries are personal information in Canada (PIPEDA, Quebec's Law 25), in
the EEA and the UK (GDPR), and in many other places. If you publish them, the obligations are
yours, not the project's: tell people, honour requests to be left out
(
<user nick="…" ignore="y">), and do not keep more than you need. - Do not use pisg to harass, profile or expose anyone. It is a toy for a channel to look at itself, not a surveillance tool.
- Check before you publish. Random quotes and the URL list can carry more than
you expect;
ShowRandQuoteandBadUrlsexist for that.
The privacy policy has the practical checklist.
Other sites and software
We link to IRC clients, bots, hosts and the GNU project so you can get set up. We do not run those services, did not write that software, and are not responsible for either. Download from the official sources we link to and read their terms.
Complaints, mistakes and takedowns
If something on this site is wrong, infringes a copyright, or looks like it describes a real person, open an issue at github.com/PISG/pisg/issues and say which page and what the problem is. It will be looked at and, where the complaint is fair, fixed or removed. Do not put personal details in a public issue: for anything private, contact the maintainer, Seb, through dooubletap.github.io.
Changes
These terms may be updated. The date at the top is the current version and every change is public, commit by commit, in the site's repository. Continuing to use the site after a change means the new version applies.
Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of the Province of Quebec and the federal laws of Canada that apply there, without regard to conflict-of-law rules, and the courts of that province have jurisdiction. If you are a consumer resident elsewhere, this does not deprive you of the protection of the mandatory rules of your own country.
